A supermarket staff member has escaped an armed robbery unharmed after he was held hostage by the thief.

An unknown offender allegedly armed with a knife approached a supermarket employee outside a Foodworks in Diggers Rest, north west of Melbourne, about 8.15pm on October 5.
Police said the armed man threatened the staff member and, while holding the knife to his neck, dragged him back into the store.
He demanded money from another supermarket employee and ran from the Foodworks with the cash.
CCTV showed the man fleeing the store, jumping a fence, before tripping over on Welcome Road.
No one was injured during the robbery, police confirmed.
Search for armed man
Police have launched a search for the thief and released images of the robbery.

The man is described as being Caucasian in appearance, around 175 centimetres tall with a slim build.
He was last seen wearing grey pants, a black wind breaker with a Nike logo and black work boots.
