Australia has nabbed its best Olympic gold medal haul and total medal count only behind the Sydney 2000 result.

The Aussie team, comprised of 461 athletes, claimed 18 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze to win 53 medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The final result of the Sydney 2000 Olympics was five higher in total but two less gold. The 18 golds trump the 17 won at both Tokyo 2020 and Athens 2004.

Australia claimed the first gold in Paris with cyclist Grace Brown becoming the first-ever Aussie gold medalist in the road cycling time trial, man or woman.

The gold wave continued in the water where swimmers nabbed seven, one for sailing and the Fox sisters won three gold in canoe slalom.

On wheels, it was a gold in BMX, two for cycling - one road and one track - and two golds for skateboarding.

14-year-old skater Arisa Trew's win saw her become the youngest Aussie Olympic medallist.

Matthew Ebden and John Peers saw the first Aussie tennis gold medal since Atlanta 1996 with their men's doubles win.

Nina Kennedy cleared the bar to get the record result by becoming the first Australian woman to win a gold in the pole vault.

Mollie O'Callaghan was Australia's most successful athlete at the games winning three gold, a silver and a bronze.

Aussie athletes competed in 42 of the 45 on the schedule, only missing from fencing, handball and volleyball.
