A moment of individual brilliance from Ben Brereton Diaz put the hosts ahead just before the break and he set up Sam Gallagher to double the advantage two minutes after the restart.

Grady Diangana's deflected effort gave the Baggies a goal their performance merited, but their profligacy ultimately proved their undoing, summed up by Karlan Grant spurning a glorious opportunity to equalise 11 minutes from time.

"We scored two great goals. I would call them PlayStation goals, FIFA goals, if you can say that. One or two touches, lovely to see. Great finishing," Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson said.

After losing their first match of the season, Steve Bruce urged his Blades to be more clinical.

"I think we're like everyone else, we're a little bit scratching our heads, thinking how the hell have we lost that. We've had our chances," he said.

"I couldn't have asked for anything more ... We have to be a bit more clinical, that's my only criticism ... anybody neutral would have come away and thought how the hell have Blackburn won that. Football at times, that's why it's the game we love."

Middlesbrough meanwhile remain winless after drawing 2-2 at home to Sheffield United.

Chuba Akpom scored in each half as Boro twice came from behind at the Riverside, with his goals cancelling out a first-half strike from Sander Berge and a second-half own goal from Ryan Giles.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Greek side PAOK and looked to have no future on Teesside when he was excluded from the squad that began pre-season training.

However, he was restored to the fold ahead of the club's final friendly with Marseille, with Chris Wilder now adamant he will not be going anywhere this summer.

"It was a difficult situation for Chuba when I came in, and a difficult situation for us. But he doesn't need to worry about anything else now, because he's going to be part of us going forward," Wilder said.

"He could, and possibly should, have come off at halftime because he was having treatment, but he wanted to stay on. His individual performance was very good and his goals were great."
