“The main thing we normally say is; wake up with make up” begins Shiralee McGann of Enhance Skin Care.
That is the one of the primary ideas behind getting cosmetic tattoo work.
“You don’t have to think; it’s the mental freedom of not having to put on make up in the morning.”
This can be convenient for anyone, including swimmers and other sports people.
It’s also suits people who wear glasses because they don’t have to take them off and struggle to see what they’re doing while putting make-up on.
Simplifying the bathroom routine isn’t the only situation it’s useful for though.
Cosmetic tattooing can also be done as part of the corrective work after a surgery or an injury.
This may be colouring in an areola (nipple) as part of a breast reconstruction after cancer surgery, or minimising the obviousness of scars if you’ve had some sort of accident.
Getting back to the applications related to make up replacement, “As you age you lose colour. It can put colour and definition back in.
“Also, occasionally people will get add-on features like an eyelash tint, which means no need for mascara.
“With the eyebrows, we can do a feather-touch effect which is softer, or a brush effect, or a harder effect.”
Same with the lips, it can be done from a soft look to a semi-lipstick look. Again with the eyeliner and lash enhancement, it can be as intense as you want.
“I’ve been doing it for quite a few years; since 1995” recalls Shiralee.
“The main reason I did it was, for myself, I get allergies and I can’t wear mascara. It’s great for allergy sufferers.
“I would also get skin that would crack and bleed” from make up products.
Shiralee was also concerned that “Long-lasting lipsticks have toxins in them and you ingest a surprising amount of make up” .
Before you say anything about what ingredients a tattoo contains, it should be noted that “It’s different to body-art tattoo ink that has a lot more toxins in it.”
As a result, “One benefit of cosmetic tattoos is that it doesn’t last forever.
“It does fade over time so you can change the colouring, or get a softer eyeliner.
“We can adjust the look over the course of your ageing process.”
Also along those lines, “You’re never stuck with a tattoo. We can do removal, or corrective shapes. We can also adjust colours quite nicely.”
Shiralee notes that “We like to do a free consultation as well before they commit to anything.
“I’ll spend about half an hour talking about shape and colour before we even go near the tattoo gun.”
