PLENTY of Australians will lose money betting on Melbourne Cup Day, but next Tuesday some dedicated Queanbeyan charity volunteers will be losing all their hair in the quest to find a cure for cancer.
Queanbeyan woman Karen Bennett, her daughter Stacey and friend Ryan Wilson have raised almost $5000 for cancer already and will undergo the big shave at Thoroughbred Park to raise awareness of the disease.
Ms Bennett said she was motivated to raise funds and awareness after losing her mum, Beverley Blandon, to cancer four weeks ago.
"My mum passed away four weeks ago, and I've actually lost my mum, my aunty and my nan to cancer in the last two years," Ms Bennett said.
