THE SATURDAY AGE RACING EXPERTS' QUADDIE
DAVID JONES CUP LEG 1
The big query in this race is the French galloper Prairie Star. On his best European form he would win, but his last run was terrible. South Australian-trained Bagman and Epsom Handicap fourth placegetter Lightinthenite are the two strongest local hopes.
NUMBERS: 1, 2, 5, 12
CAULFIELD CUP LEG 2
There are a number of genuine winning chances in the Caulfield Cup so we've gone wide here to try and stay in the game.
NUMBERS: 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14
TRISTARC STAKES LEG 3
Mosheen returned to form last start and we think that she will win again. Take Red Tracer as insurance just in case she is toppled.
NUMBERS: 1, 4
ALINGHI STAKES LEG 4
A really tough race but we will trim up with a quartet of fast mares to try and secure what should be a really healthy quaddie payout.
NUMBERS: 2, 3, 12, 13

FAR AND WIDE
Randwick Race 5, No. 9 SESSIONS Looked very good on debut earlier this year and resumes at the back end of the Sydney carnival to launch a Melbourne assault. Has trialled impressively and is well above average.
The trainer: John Sadler
WINCHESTER (Race 8, No. 4)
Has really impressed me in his short time in Australia. His work since his last run has been good. He needs a firm track to show his best but, as I say, he is going very well.
LADY MELKSHAM (Race 10, No. 2)
She ticks all the boxes and I'm very happy with her but I put the one proviso on her that she's yet to win on a firm track, so we'll find out if she can cope with hard ground.
The trainer: Robert Smerdon
ELECTRIC FUSION (Race 3, No. 8)
While he looked impressive the other night at Moonee Valley, that was a maiden race and he's jumping considerably in grade. But you're only three once and this will give us an insight as to whether he will go on to the Derby in a few weeks.
MOSHEEN (Race 9, No. 1)
Couldn't be happier with her. She showed she was back to her best at Flemington last time, however she has drawn awkwardly. But it's just another step towards the Myer Classic, her ultimate goal.
The jockey Dwayne Dunn
THUNDER RAIN (Race 1, No. 4)
Looked good winning at Mornington the other day. While this is a step up in grade, she strikes me as a nice filly and appears well placed here.
CRYSTAL WEB (Race 2, No. 6)
Sat outside the leader the other day at Flemington when finishing fifth. I think he'll benefit greatly from that outing and will be all the better for his second crack at 1400 metres.
SUBIASO (Race 3, No. 7)
Will need to lift on his game. Ridden back at his past few starts and I think we might put him a little closer this time, but as I say, he's got to improve.
HAPPY ZERO (Race 5, No. 7)
Raced well during the winter when placed in the Stradbroke. He's much fitter and I think that recent racing will bring him to his peak form. Could be highly competitive.
LATIN NEWS (Race 6, No. 10)
I don't know a lot about him; he's a Queenslander who looks to have a nice form record and he's drawn to run a good race.
NIWOT (Race 8, No. 11)
A lovely horse who's got stronger and stronger in his lead-up to this race. I think the barrier he's got and the barriers that are so awkward for the main hopes in the race certainly bring him into the cup with a great chance. He's a dour stayer who's better suited under the handicap conditions than weight-for-age.
The jockey Craig Williams
CATERED (Race 1, No. 9)
Very nice filly who looks well placed here and from the draw should get an ideal run. A chance.
JIMANDO (Race 3, No. 2)
I galloped him on Thursday and he felt really, really good. He's a nice tough and strong stayer who meets many of these on far better conditions weight-wise. Sure to be one of the dangers.
SUMMERBLISS (Race 4, No. 12)
Highly promising filly. You can't knock her winning record of one start for one win. She feels like a quality filly and while this is a step up she's been targeted at the Oaks, so we'll get a fairly good measure on how she's going here.
WHATEVERWHENEVER (Race 5, No. 13)
A Queensland-trained galloper who has great record back in his home state. His first run here was full of merit and has drawn to get a great run.
GREEN BIRDIE (Race 6, No. 2)
Good sprinter who looks ideally placed here. He had no luck at his last start and I think he'll be right in the mix and I don't think barrier 11, the outside gate, will prove a hindrance for him.
LIGHTINTHENITE (Race 7, No. 5)
Drawn ideally and really caught the eye in Sydney last time when he finished a solid fourth in the Epsom. That's a great form race and I really think he'll be a danger.
DUNADEN (Race 8, No. 2)
Has worked really well since he's arrived here and I couldn't fault his performances down at Werribee. But barrier 22 is going to mean he needs lots of luck from that gate.
SOFT SAND (Race 9, No. 11)
Going really well back on her home track here but if she can get some luck from her awkward draw she'll be right in the mix.
CITY OF SONG (Race 10, No. 10)
Has come back from a spell in great order. She's worked nicely at Caulfield and I've always had lots of time for her. Drawn in the middle of the field here and will be right in the finish.
