The 28-year-old singer has been cast as Marion Crane in the final season of the US TV drama series Bates Motel.
Bates Motel is the prequel to the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho.
Marion Crane, who was played in the original film by Janet Leigh, was stabbed to death in the film by serial killer Norman Bates.
The disturbing murder - known as "the shower scene" - became one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.
The high-profile surprise casting was announced at the annual comic book, film and television convention Comic-Con in San Diego.
The show's executive producer Carlton Cuse told media he became aware some time ago that Rihanna followed the series.
"We heard Rihanna was a fan, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate," he said.
"We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way."
Production on the fifth and final season of Bates Motel begins in August in Vancouver. The final season will air on US and Australian television in 2017.
