Originally coming from a classic 15-a-side background, Holland's ascension to the top tier of the fast-paced format of the game was a surprise even to the footballer himself.

"I never thought I would play rugby at all, let alone at an elite level or a national level," Holland said.

While the broader community would love to watch the former Queanbeyan White play at an elite level in the flesh, the ability to indulge in an August odyssey through travelling to Brazil for the Games is not a possibility for everyone. Which is where social media comes in, according to Twitter Australia head of sports partnerships Jonno Simpson.

"From my perspective, there is no better place to follow the stories of athletes, teams, and your country," he said.

"I often use the analogy of Twitter being the stadium in your pocket.

"You can follow Lewis Holland and he can provide an insight into what it's like to be on the journey to the Olympics, participation in the Olympics, and then the trip home after the Olympics.

"He'll be putting up photos, he'll be putting up videos, he'll be taking you inside the Athlete's Village, inside the venue, and most importantly, he will provide insight into what it's like in Rio."

Simpson also pointed towards the ability of social media - particularly Twitter - in allowing fans to send direct 'Herograms' to the athletes competing at the Games.

"I remember when I was younger, broadcasters would give opportunities for their readers or their viewers to send messages of support to their favourite athlete or team," Simpson said.

"I think the Herogram messages we have traditionally been doing via print, broadcast and email, is now turning into social media and we're seeing a lot of that content.
