Ex-Queanbeyan White, Lewis Holland, has taken another step towards selection in the Australian rugby sevens team bound for Rio de Janeiro and the summer Olympic games next month.

Returning from an injured ankle, Holland was quickly chosen to take part in the crucial 16-man training camp in Darwin by head coach Andy Friend.

"I've made it clear to the group that it'll be tough to make the squad for Rio if they haven't been selected for Darwin," Friend said.

"However, I have had a commitment from the non-travelling players that they will continue to work hard back in Sydney and maintain the high standards this program has set. As we have found to our detriment this past week, injuries can happen at any time so we need the entire group to be ready to step into the breach at short notice."

Nick Cummins (knee), Greg Jeloudev (foot), Tom Lucas (knee), Henry Speight (knee) and Pama Fou (knee), were not considered for the trip north due to injury.

The final 12 man squad - plus two travelling reserves - will be announced on Thursday, July 14, in Sydney

Queanbeyan Netballers bound for State Age 

More than 3,300 athletes from 309 teams will descend upon Sydney for the 2016 instalment of the SAMSUNG State Age Netball Championship between Saturday, July 2, and Monday, July 4. Queanbeyan is set to field four of those teams.

Surf’s up in Kiama

The surf's up for the grommets of southern NSW, with the announcement that the World Surf League will hold its 2017 installment of the World Junior Championships at Kiama.

NSW state government Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres, said the event would give Kiama worldwide exposure, and attract thousands of visitors to the region.

"The WSL World Junior Championships is the premier event for young surfers, and they will see the very best athletes coming to Kiama to compete," he said.

"It will be a huge boost to the South Coast, confirming the region's reputation as a must visit for surfers."

Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward, said the championships will see the region and its beaches promoted around the world.

"I can't wait to welcome competitors to Kiama next year as this is a fantastic way for local surfing fans to view the stars of tomorrow on one of NSW's best beaches," he said.

Previous winners of this event include world-class surfers such as Sally Fitzgibbons, Joel Parkinson, Andy Irons and Adriano de Souza.

The 2017 event will be held at Kiama between Wednesday, January 4, and Sunday, January 15.
