Qbn trio set to bowl against the best

THREE of Queanbeyan’s finest women’s lawn bowlers will be in action next week when the Australian Over-60s Sides championship gets underway at the Queanbeyan Bowling Club.

Lorraine Donney, Bette McDonald and Maggie Johnston have all been selected to represent the ACT at the tournament which kicks off on Tuesday.

The ACT turned plenty of heads at last year’s Senior Sides Championships after taking out heavyweight NSW in one of the upsets of the tournament.

And Donney, who was a member of the ACT’s giant killing line-up last time around, said the sport’s minnows would be out to leave their mark on the competition once again.

“I think it was a shock to a few people when we knocked NSW off last time,” she said. “We’ve got a strong side going down this year so we should give them a run for their money again. The other states will have to work for it if they want to get a win against us.”

Donney and Johnston have previously taken out the ACT Over-60s Pairs event together while Johnston is also a former two-time ACT Champion of Champions singles winner. McDonald claimed silver in the Over-60s Sides event at this year’s Australian Open in February.

The championships will begin with a Civic Reception at The Q on Monday evening before play gets underway at the Queanbeyan Bowling Club on Tuesday morning.
