Trenches will be dug through the road on Collett and Monaro streets and the Queanbeyan Leagues Club lane way during construction, as well as a small section of pedestrian footpath on Monaro Street.
Work is expected to take around five weeks and some power outages will be necessary to change individual shops over to the new cable.
"Safety barriers will be installed around the work site to ensure the safety of the community and the work will be completed in small sections to minimise the impact to pedestrians," Essential Energy southern regional manager Steven Ilitch said.
Affected customers will receive written notification confirming the dates and times of the power outages.
Further electricity network upgrades will continue on Monaro Street between Crawford and Lowe streets in mid to late June.
