The Office of Sport's Sport and Recreation southern regional manager Eric Brooks said that regular golf can offer a range of health benefits, including the improvement of stamina, cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, and the reduction of stress.
"Seniors golf is the biggest growth area within the game in recent years," Mr Brooks said.
"Our Golf for Seniors program is ideal for everyone aged 55 and over who wish to learn to play golf or to simply improve their game.
"It is a great opportunity to bring a friend and experience golf in a social and safe environment."
The clinics began last Friday, April 29, and involved participants taking part in a one hour skills focused clinic run by Queanbeyan Golf Club head professional Jake Nagle.
"The idea originally was to introduce seniors to the game of golf, but it turned out that the majority of them had played before," Nagle said.
"So we went through the basics, such as teaching them how to grip, how to stand, and then different aspects of the game such as the short game, long game, course aesthetics and golf management."
The clinics have proven popular, with Nagle being forced to cap the participant number at 12 per class with a number of individuals on a reservation list.
"We're going to look at running some more towards the end of July due to the popularity we have seen," Nagle said.
The final Golf for Seniors skills clinic will be held on Friday, May 13, from 10.30am.
