In recent months, the centre has undergone renovations to provide a broader range of activities and sports for all sections of the community to engage in. The upgrades to both the centre and its programs include a total resurfacing of the facility's courts, alterations to the original netting structure, alongside the inclusion of a number of entertainment activities, and Q-One Indoor Sports Centre coordinator Adam Johnston said the extensive upgrades will attract increased patronage.
“We’re still running adult social sports and will be offering futsal, netball, volleyball and floorball, and then we have got a whole entertainment range that we are bringing to the community here including bubble footballs, archery tag, and birthday parties,” Mr Johnston said.
“Then we will be offering junior programs such as junior soccer, tennis, In2Cricket, and a fundamental skills program known as the Right Start program for kids between the ages of two and a half to six.”
“Previously the indoor centre was such a niche market, and a lot of people here didn’t even know where it was, but we want to be able to cater for all of the family needs because it doesn’t matter what they’re doing, as long as they are active and as long as they are having fun.”
The council-owned asset was previously managed by a private company until September 2014 when council assumed management of the failing business. But Queanbeyan City Council manager for community business Daniel Fulton said the upgrades would alleviate the pressure the facility had previously placed on council budget through an increased level of accessibility, patronage, and subsequently profit.
“This is a very exciting time for the Q-One Indoor Sports Centre and the Queanbeyan community,” Mr Fulton said.
“The upgrades to the court surface and netting will enhance a number of sports currently on offer at the centre and will see entertainment activities include bubble football, archery tag, inflatables and birthday parties become available, along with specialised programs for young children and seniors.
“The changes to the Q-One Indoor Sports Centre will allow it to be much more profitable and will reduce the impact that the centre has had on Council’s budget in previous years.”
To celebrate the facility’s relaunch, a community open day will be held at the Q-One Indoor Sport Centre, Yass Road, Queanbeyan, on Saturday, April 30.
