The Australian Drug Foundation and the NSW Ministry of Health are partnering with Queanbeyan City Council to bring the forum, called 'Breaking the Ice', to Queanbeyan. Speakers will tackle the growing issue of ice, or crystal methamphetamine, addiction in the community.

The Australian Drug Foundation NSW Community Programs Manager Nikki Woolley said ice is a real concern.

Data showed that in New South Wales between 2009-10 and 2013-14, the number of methamphetamine-related hospitalisations increased from 534 to 2616.

"This forum will provide you with evidence-based information about 'ice' and where to seek help, support and treatment in your area. The solution lies in the community's hands and we will give you some practical tools to deal with the issue," said Ms Woolley.

"More importantly, we need to start seeing the person rather than just the drug and to encourage people to seek help early, rather than hide the problem."

The forum will aim to ensure the community is informed about ice, whilst trying to break down the stigma to see the person, not just the drug.

Speakers will include Julie Tongs OAM of the Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service and Linda Wigginton of Southern NSW Local Health, as well as Monaro police officer Neil Grey and more.

Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said similar forums have been held successfully across the country.

"Drug and alcohol addiction has been an issue in most communities for a number of years and events such as this forum will allow people affected to gain the support they need," Cr Overall said.
