Walking the walk

THE dark clouds and threat of rain wasn't enough to deter Janelle Morgan from making the 25,000 steps from her front door to her workplace on Friday, September 28.

Mrs Morgan embarked on 20-kilometre journey from Queanbeyan to Deakin for National Walk to Work Day.

She now plans to complete the walk once a month.

"Since the four years I've been here, I've just driven everywhere because of the distance between places but the walk reminded me how nice it is just to go walk instead," she said.

Hitting the pavement at 4.45am, Mrs Morgan arrived at work at 8.10am.

The marketing communications coordinator said she would've been their earlier but she had detoured to Parliament House and around Lake Burley Griffin on her trip.

"The walk was a nice chance for me to appreciate some of the things I usually pass on the way to work and go to places I wouldn't normally go," she said.

"I saw a lot of the early morning cyclists and joggers."

Mrs Morgan said she decided to do the walk all in the name of healthy living.

"I couldn't sleep the night before, I just really wanted to get up and get going. I was really determined to get from point A to B because I had to get to work and get some things done before the public holiday," she said.

"It helps to have a goal and destination, it makes it easier if you think 'I just have to get to the next suburb'."

The Queanbeyan resident used social media to record her trip, tweeting updates and uploading photos to Instagram.

"It was nice to document the trip, it was a rainy and cloudy morning but there were glimpses of a pretty sunrise and a rainbow. I also came across a bunny rabbit at the Monaro Highway underpass and stopped to feed it some carrots I had packed for my lunch," she said.

"I had people following me [on Twitter] and it was nice to share with other people and encourage them to get out and go for a walk.

"I also did some radio interviews on the way and people were beeping and that was encouraging especially on the last leg."

Mrs Morgan said she wasn't deterred by the dark clouds and light rain during her morning walk. She said the conditions actually made for better photos.

Unfortunately, her plans for a return trip home were dashed as the weather turned sour on Friday afternoon with rain and strong winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning recording almost 25.2 millimetres of rain and wind gusts of 76 kilometres per hour.

"I was still planning to walk home but an hour before I was going to leave it turned really bad. My husband called and said 'I'd better come and pick you up'," she said.

"I felt great the next day though, my legs were a bit stiff but I wasn't sore or anything. I'll definitely be doing it again."
