The Bureau of Meteorology warned severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Royalla, Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station and Bredbo at 4.30pm.
The thunderstorms were moving towards the northeast. They were forecast to affect Hume by 5pm and Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong and Canberra Airport by 5:30 pm.
The State Emergency Service is advising people to move your car away from trees and undercover, and secure loose items around the house.
Residents are warned to keep clear of fallen power lines, creeks and storm drains.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:30 pm.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and parts of the South West Slopes districts.
