The grass is greener on our side of the fence, at least according to Queanbeyan Golf Club head professional Jake Nagle. In his nine years on staff, Nagle has never seen the local fairway in such good shape and the golfer believes the current conditions are perfect for this weekend’s Open Day and the associated tournament which will be held on Saturday, February 6.

“At the moment, condition-wise we are probably the best I’ve ever seen the fairway,” he said
“Membership numbers have really increased over the last 12 months, mainly because of the condition of the course. The state it is in is the big one, if the course is in good condition, people are going to come and play, and if it’s not, people are probably going to try and find somewhere nicer.”
The pristine conditions of the course have come at the right time as the local fairway will be playing host to the 45th installment of the Men’s Open Amateur Championships and the 34th Women’s Open Amateur Championships as part of their Open Day.
“As far as the Open goes, last year was the best field we have ever had, and this year the field is down a little bit for some reason, but we still have some really good quality players competing,” Nagle said.
“Probably 95 percent of the field are locals, and we’re pretty lucky here because we have some really good juniors.”
Of the 180 players set to explore the local green throughout the course of the day, Queanbeyan Golf Club’s Lachlan Tisma is expected to perform particularly well, after recently breaking a course record and perpetuating a spell of impressive form.
To enter the 2016 Open Day, it costs $25 for members and $30 for non-members. It will be held at the Queanbeyan Golf Club on Saturday, February 6.
