WARATAH defender Amy Morschel is used to playing through the pain.
In her young career, the aspiring goalkeeper has already been forced to battle past serious ankle and back injuries. That’s not to mention the everyday knocks you pick up as a six-foot defender who doesn’t hesitate to throw herself into the fray.
So when Morschel suffered a recurrence of a recent back injury just five minutes in to last Sunday’s Queanbeyan Netball Association grand final, it was simply par for the course.
“When I first did it I thought I might go off but then I thought, ‘nah, I’ll push it out, there’s no point going to a grand final and sooking out so I pushed through,” Morschel said. “It was pretty upsetting that I couldn’t play to my potential.
“It’s alright though, it happens. I’m pretty used to injuries by now.”
After pulling a muscle in her back four weeks ago at the gym, the injured flared up again in the opening stages of last weekend’s match.
The towering shot stopper however, appeared to show little ill-effect as she put in a typically assured defensive display.
Waratah’s defensive pressure proved key to the side’s victory after holding Jerra to just 30 goals, far and away Joeys’ lowest total off the season.
Morschel however, admitted there were some anxious moments on court midway through the match as Jerra refused to crack in an impressive first-half display.
“It was pretty tough out there,” she said. “I was nervous going into [the game] and I was right to be. Jerra’s got good shooters and good defenders at each end but we managed to pull through.”
Morschel will now enjoy a much-needed break before State League trials begin at the end of October.
