Wildlife warrior and Dancing with the Stars winner Bindi Irwin says she's happy to be back in her khakis after arriving home at the Australia Zoo.

The inspirational 17-year-old touched down at Brisbane Airport on Monday with her mother Terry and brother Bob after winning the 21st season of the US Dancing with the Stars last week.

Appearing on Today on Tuesday alongside her family, Bindi described the experience as "special" and "so beautiful".

"I feel like I've just woken up from an incredible dream," she said.

"To have my family there with me every step of the way meant the most. That support and love kept me going. For someone who's known for wildlife conservation and not dancing, it was an unbelievable journey."

The competition has catapulted Bindi's star appeal overseas with appearances on Good Morning America, The View, and a spread in People magazine. She now has 1 million Instagram followers.

Mother Terry said she was "incredibly proud" of her daughter who walked away with $350,000 after winning the series.

"Robert and I were both with Bindi everyday and Robert worked hard to finished school early so he could be at the shows every week."

"It was incredible. She got the most perfect scores in the 21 season history so Bindi just nailed it. We're really proud of her."

Bindi frequently paid tribute to her father Steve Irwin in her emotional dances and after one routine broke down in tears in the arms of her dance partner, Derek Hough.

Speaking to Today from the Australia Zoo, Bindi said she drew on her father for support.

"Dad lives within us no matter where we go and his strength keeps us going. We certainly tried to do that everyday with all of our dances.

"We want to make sure everything he worked so hard for continues in the future".

The family's focus after returning home will now turn to celebrating Bob's 12th birthday on Tuesday.

A prehistoric-themed party will be held at Australia Zoo in honour of the budding wildlife photographer.
