Brumbies boss Michael Jones is keen to initiate talks with cross-code rivals the Raiders as well as Canberra racing officials with a bumper weekend of action locked in for March 4-6.

Canberra sports fans will be treated to a jammed calendar next year, with six weekends of at least two games involving the Brumbies, Raiders and GWS Giants.

The Raiders and Giants will go head to head on April 17 with the Green Machine playing the Sharks at Canberra Stadium at 2pm and GWS taking on Port Adelaide at Manuka at 1.10pm.

It's the biggest overlap of sports in Canberra in recent history, with the three codes preferring to have stand-alone fixtures to attract the biggest possible crowds.

But Jones hosed down fears of a dramatic effect on crowd numbers, declaring a three-day sporting feast in March as the ideal way to showcase Canberra.

The Brumbies will host their biggest match of the Super Rugby season on the Friday night when the NSW Waratahs come to Canberra Stadium for an Australian derby.

The Raiders are next on the list when they open their NRL season against the Penrith Panthers on Saturday night. And the capital's biggest race day will follow on Sunday to compete three hectic days, with the Black Opal and Canberra Cup to be held at Thoroughbred Park.

"We don't see it as taking away from each other, if people want to come to Canberra on that weekend they're going to get a triple whammy," Jones said.

"We think it's a great weekend, it's a huge opportunity to give Canberra promotion as well. There's the perception [outside of the capital] that Canberra is a cemetery with lights because nothing happens here.

"But this weekend coming up just goes to show that there are massive events on and there's a reason to come to Canberra, we've known about it for a while.

"We also don't have a massive overlap in crowds for the Brumbies and Raiders. Now that we know that we should do a two-for-one deal or give Raiders members a discount at the rugby and vice versa. That way you get people going to both."

The Super Rugby draw has been locked in for months and it's understood NRL officials approached the Brumbies about potentially shifting some of their games to accommodate the Raiders.

However, Super Rugby's complex draw across three countries meant that any requests were unable to be met.

The NRL published its draw on Friday, with the Raiders kicking off their season on March 5 against the Panthers.

The Brumbies and Raiders will both play in Canberra the weekends of April 23-24 for Anzac Day matches, May 28-29 and July 1-3.

The Giants will play a pre-season match at Manuka Oval on February 25, with the Brumbies to begin their campaign the next night.

A Raiders spokesperson said the club wanted fans to vote with their feet for the weekend of three events in Canberra and hoped the direct clash with the Giants on April 17 would not affect crowds.

"It's happened before, you can't avoid every weekend," he said of the schedule clash with the Giants.

"It's going to happen just based on the team's availability. We know we have a really strong supporter base, we're Canberra's local team. We're the ones who are here 365 days a year and hopefully we'll see big crowds get behind us."

The Brumbies are hoping to attract more than 20,000 fans to their rivalry contest against the Waratahs while more than 10,000 were at the Black Opal day earlier this year.

Canberra Racing boss Peter Stubbs wrote to the Raiders and Brumbies to inform them their premier race day would be held earlier next year, and hoped all three could join forces.

"We want to talk to them to work together to attract people to Canberra for all three events," Stubbs said.

"Crowds are affected when there's a direct time clash, but I don't think it will be impacted on different days. Even if it's not a joint ticket deal, but promoting that it's all one."
