The Queanbeyan Yowies women's side won the Waratah State League title in August and it appears they might have a shot at it again with the emerging talent coming through the ranks at the Roadrunners.
Coach Jenny Spooner's under 18s made it all the way to the NSW Waratah League State Cup grand final after winning the Waratah Southern Junior League finals.
The road to the State Cup itself was far from easy, as the team had to win six games to make the grand final.
The girls beat Mossvale by 7 points in the semi-final, a suprising 34 point flogging against Goulburn in the preliminary final- a team who had not been beaten by Queanbeyan all year.
Wagga awaited them in the grand final and it was never going to be easy, as they were a quality outfit who only lost one match all season.
Bodies on the line led to some key players being fouled out, but the girls were relaxed and focused and managed to come away with a seven-point win and a ticket into the NSW Waratah League State Cup in a fortnight's time.
The squad needed to finish top of their pool to get into the grand final and it started a lot easier that expected when wild card entrants Wagga pulled out of the competition leading to a first round win by the Roadrunners from the forfeit.
Manly was next on the hit list and the girls finished with a 14-point victory after adapting to their gameplay.
Northern Junior League's undefeated Tamworth was the final hurdle- Spooner identified their primary scorer and said she knew they were a chance of winning if they shut her down.
Scores were tied 63-all at three-quarter time, but the starting five, Nadezda Dorsoski, Adelene Wells, Grace Combe, Jane Spooner and captain Issy Turner blew Tamworth away in the final term getting the Roadrunners over the line by 23 points and earning them a spot in the State Cup grand final.
Winner of the Metro League Norths Bears awaited Queanbeyan in the grand final.
Spooner said the girls were nervous and despite a shaky start gave it their all in a full team effort.
Norths eventually won by 14, but Spooner said 2015 was an amazing year for the girls and it was a fantastic way to send off those who are in their final year of the Queanbeyan Road-runners junior rep- resentative basketball, after playing for the club since under 12s.
