Burns survivor Turia Pitt is getting married.

The mining engineer and athlete became engaged to her long-term partner Michael Hoskin while holidaying on the Maldives.

"I'm so overwhelmed with love at the moment," Ms Pitt told The Australian Women's Weekly.

"It's an incredible feeling. Michael's my life partner, I've known that for years – and we've talked about marriage for as long as I can remember, and yet the proposal still came as a surprise."

Ms Pitt was completing an ultramarathon in the Kimberleys in 2011 when she was surrounded by bushfire, suffering burns to 64 per cent of her body.

Doctors told her the injuries were so extensive she may not survive. But after more than 100 surgeries and learning to walk again, Ms Pitt went on to become a motivational speaker. Last year, she was named the NSW Premier's Woman of the Year.

It was at school Ms Pitt met her future husband, a former police officer from Ulladulla on the NSW south coast.

Mr Hoskin revealed to the Women's Weekly that he bought a diamond ring when she was still in intensive care.

"Stoked to have this beautiful man in my life!" she wrote of her engagement on Facebook on Wednesday. "You bring out the best in me and I can't wait for the rest of our lives together."
