Queanbeyan firefighters were called to the construction site at about 9.20am on Monday, July 6 following reports of a gas leak.
Station officer Mark Beachcroft said it took workers from the gas company about four hours to find the correct gas line and shut it off. One end of high Street was temporarily closed during the incident.
"A contractor was running a link through the Telstra pits and accidentally ruptured a gas pipe in the process," station officer Mark Beachcroft said.
"During that time we monitored the atmosphere using a gas detector.
"Our primary concern was to ensure there was nothing that could ignite the gas which is why we evacuated the work site."
The gas line was shut off at about 1.40pm and no one was injured during the incident.
