The new royal princess will receive a cot blanket and a donation to a possum sanctuary as her official gifts from the Australian people.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced on Monday the princess, whose name has been revealed as Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, would receive a blanket made from Tasmanian merino wool which would be embroidered with wattle by Canberra-based embroiderers.

A $10,000 donation will also be made to honour the birth to the Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria to support its work conserving the Australian Mountain Pygmy-possum.

"I hope one day the princess can visit Australia and hold a Mountain Pygmy-possum herself," Mr Abbott said in a statement.

The present is similar to the one given to the little princess's older brother, Prince George, who received a toy bilby, a Mem Fox book and a $10,000 donation to Taronga Zoo's bilby preservation program.

Prince George used his free pass to the zoo, another part of his gift, on his visit to Australia last year where he was presented with a plush bilby.

To the embarrassment of his parents and sound of camera shutters wildly whirring the prince stared down the toy before throwing it to the ground.

Mr Abbott on Saturday said the birth of a royal baby was a "great moment for any family and Australia shares this young family's joy".

"We wish the young princess, a long and happy life," Mr Abbott said.

"I am sure that the princess and her older brother, Prince George, will in time develop a deep familiarity and love of Australia – feelings the rest of their family already share."

"In the meantime, Australia sends its best wishes to the Duke and Duchess during this special time in their lives."
