Just over the weekend, a Queanbeyan owner was reunited with their five-year-old golden retriever named 'Pippa' who had been missing for eight days.

Pippa was found on Sunday, April 5 after community members helped by posting sightings of the pet and one good samaritan even followed the pup around for an hour until the owners were able to meet up with their beloved dog.

Founder of the Canberra Lost Pets database Anna Rimondos said social media, Facebook in particular, was very helpful when it came to linking up a missing pet and its owner.

The organisation helps match about 30 pets with their owners each week. The group is run by 12 volunteers who post to their Facebook page, Twitter account and standalone website.

"I think social media is so successful because there are a lot of animal lovers in Canberra and Queanbeyan who can empathise with other owners who have lost their pets," Ms Rimondos said.

"Social media makes it easy for people to help by just sharing the post, tagging others, encouraging and giving tips to the owners."

The Canberra Lost Pets database has helped locate missing dogs, cats, birds, ferrets, horses, pigs and even goats.

Ms Rimondos said in the case of Pippa, her owner was very active in keeping other social media users up to date. This proved to be successful with the original post shared more than 200 times and seen by about 11,000 people.

"Pippa's owner was very good in updating comments of where he had looked and it was really great, it's different to just sending a photo," she said.

"Being active helps spread the message."

In the case of finding a missing pet, Ms Rimondos said the animal should be taken to the vet or pound to see if it microchipped. It is also helpful to post up fliers or notices near the location where the animal was found as most pets come from the neighbourhood they were lost in.

If the animal was found in Canberra, RSPCA and Canberra Connect should also be notified.

Ms Rimondos also reminded pet owners to ensure their animals were microchipped and details were up to date.
