A boy, 12, has died after he was hit by a four-wheel-drive at Port Stephens, north of Newcastle on Monday afternoon.

It is believed the schoolboy was struck shortly after he got off a bus on Marsh Road at Salt Ash just before 4pm.
Police said the boy was fatally struck about two kilometres south of Nelson Bay Road.
 
Police said the boy got off the bus and as he crossed the road was struck by a Triton Ute, being driven by a 19-year-old man.
He sustained criticial injuries and died on the way to hospital.
The driver was taken to Calgary Mater Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Inquiries are continuing.
