ACT Liberal Zed Seselja says the message from the Queensland election to Tony Abbott is not to take re-election for granted despite his large majority and to be prepared to change policies where necessary.

His reaction was echoed by Queanbeyan-based Liberal Peter Hendy who said the Queensland result was "confronting" and would have federal implications.
The territory's Labor MPs say the Coalition has been warned about its policy of cuts to the public service.
Senator Seselja, who will attend Mr Abbott's address on Monday at the National Press Club, hopes the speech will have a "laser-like" focus on the government's priorities for the year.
"I think Tony Abbott has acknowledged this year we want to do better than we did last year," he said.
"I think certainly we as a government need to explain our policies better, I think there is a need to listen and learn and sometimes adjust policies.
"I think [the Queensland election] is a message that even with a strong majority, you can never take re-election for granted.
"With that kind of volatility, in what we've seen happen over three years, there's nothing to say we couldn't see a LNP government in Queensland in three years from now."
Dr Hendy said: "The Queensland result is obviously confronting and will have federal implications, in that it indicates that it is not just sufficient for governments to seek to lead, they must take the community with them.
"That is the key lesson I have taken and will be telling our leadership."
Labor Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh said Queensland voters had rejected "ideologically driven cuts" to the state public service and services.
"Tony Abbott was kicked off the campaign trail in Queensland but he was in the forefront of voters' minds," he said.
"The model of extreme cuts to the public service and slashing health and education – the parallels between Newman and Abbott are very strong.
"When given a chance to put in a report card on that approach to politics, Queenslanders have been pretty clear that they don't like it.
ACT Labor senator Kate Lundy said there were profound parallels between the styles of the Queensland and federal government policies.
"We know that Campbell Newman's attack on the public service and ripping funding out of community services was obviously not just poorly received by the Queensland community, but completely rejected when they had the opportunity to vote," she said.
"It sends the strongest possible message to Abbott who took exactly the same approach – arbitrary cuts across the public service and the services provided.
"Now the people of Australia will look to Queensland and think, yes that's how we feel as well, so I think it will put an enormous amount of pressure on the Abbott government to rethink their strategy.
"I think they will scramble now to re-spend money in the areas of services that they have cut, that won't have time to rebuild what they have already unpicked and ultimately I think they'll pay the price for that at the polling booth.
ACT Acting Chief Minister Simon Corbell said the Queensland result was a "resounding rejection" of an agenda to attack public services, public service jobs and institutions such as Medicare and equitable access to higher education.
"I think it is a very strong repudiation of that conservative but radical extreme agenda which Australians are now rejecting," he said.
"It emphasises the importance of a government that remains in touch and connected with its community and staying true to the values of the community.
"We saw Newman say before the last election that he would be a friend of the Queensland public service but in his first budget he cut 14,000 jobs, not dissimilar to the approach and the figure that we saw in Tony Abbott's first budget."
