Thea Baumann was inspired to create the wearable technology app, Metaverse Nails, after watching young women playing games while getting their nails done and sharing their glitzy nail art on social media.

"I wanted to converge 3D gaming, photosharing, and fashion nails together as a new social mobile product," she said.

"Essentially, I wanted to design a new device which would put holograms onto girls' fingers."

The app allows users to create and share virtual designs for their nails.

Users scan their nails with the app and then choose from various 3D holographic images to place on top of them. The virtual designs can then be shared via social media platforms including WeChat, Weibo and Twitter.

Metaverse Nails is the first wearable technology product to launch under the Ms Baumann's company, Metaverse Makeovers.

The company and its "nail accessories" is set to crack the Chinese market, backed by $750,000 in seed funding from Melbourne Angels, QUT Creative Enterprise Australia (CEA) and private investors in China.

The company will target 93 million young Chinese women with the fashion nails and companion mobile app.

Ms Baumann said "China is festooned with nail businesses" and foresees her nail app as another avenue for young women to express themselves on social media.

"These nail businesses have wi-fi access and are frequented by young women who are expressive on social media, active game players and mobile consumers.

"China also has an increasingly mobile-only generation active on social chat apps and seeking new ways to express their individuality amongst their friends."

Ms Baumann explained her company is currently trailing the app in "China's fashion, technology, and commerce epicentre" of Shanghai, a location she sees as a very fitting city to launch the new wearable tech product and raise brand awareness in the Asian region.

Coinciding with the Chinese New Year on February 19, Ms Baumann and her team have created a festive interactive design to celebrate one of the biggest events on the Chinese calendar.

Ms Baumann is no stranger to the emerging wearable technology space. The media artist and technologist has advised various technology giants about interactions between young people and augmented reality over the years.

Maurice Grasso from Melbourne Angels said Metaverse Makeovers "presented a well-researched opportunity" and impressed his organisation with its "superior technical expertise, demonstrated experience and international recognition at the highest levels of industry".

CEA CEO Anna Rooke said Metaverse Makeovers was her organisation's third investment that showcased opportunities CEA aimed to support and expand.

"Metaverse Makeovers is a great exemplar of the opportunities we want to back and accelerate," she said.

"A compelling blend of creative innovation and technology-based delivery that makes possible social and commercial outcomes not previously imagined."

In addition to the $750,000 investment, Metaverse Makeovers has earned a Commercialisation Australia grant of $262,538.

Ms Baumann isn't letting the funding get to her head, perceiving it as the beginning of a long road to launch her app in the international wearable technology market.

"My reaction on securing seed funding was not akin to winning the lotto," she said.

"It comes with the deep realisation that I will need to push forward and continue to navigate the many challenges with bringing a completely new tech product to market."
