Since the state's road safety campaign Operation Safe Arrival began on December 19, four people have died on NSW roads.

This figure is half that of last year's eight deaths in the same period. In 2012 and 2011, there were 11 and 15 deaths respectively.

It is likely this year's road toll thus far is the lowest on record, with data going back 25 years showing 1989 was the worst year with 60 deaths in the first nine days of the Christmas Period (December 19-December 27).

 

Meanwhile, more people in NSW are speeding but fewer have been caught drink-driving this festive season, according to police.

Since Friday, 907 people have been caught speeding, an increase of 144 compared to this time last year.

However there is  a decrease in the number of intoxicated drivers.

From 54,342 random breath tests, 27 drivers have been charged with drink-driving. Although 304 fewer RBTs were conducted this year compared to last year, there were 82 fewer detections; a pleasing figure for NSW Police.

Commander of Traffic and Highway Patrol Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said he was unhappy with the small number of negligent drivers police had pulled over.

"Just yesterday, we had two incidents where people have tried to evade detection by moving away from the driver's seat of a vehicle – including once when the car was still in motion," Commissioner Hartley said. "My message is: if you know you're not meant to be behind the wheel; whether it is due to not having a licence or having too much to drink, respect the law and other motorists by not driving."

Holiday traffic also caused havoc again on the north coast and out of Sydney, as drivers experienced delays of up to 70 minutes and 15-kilometre traffic jams.
