However, the 35-run defeat was the second consecutive big loss for the Renegades to start the competition.

The Renegades managed to get to 9-157 on the back of some late big hitting by Andre Russell (43 from 21 balls, including two fours a four sixes) that came only after the chase had gotten out of hand.

Earlier, Klinger smashed a six from the final ball of Scorchers innings to bring up his century (105 from 60 balls) and get Perth to 3-184 from its 20 overs. It was always going to be a tough chase.

But Jason Behrendorff was again on target from the start and made it even tougher, bowling three overs during Melbourne's first Power Play and conceding 1-12 from them. He finished with 2-16 from his four overs.

The Renegades score was just 1-21 when Matthew Wade skied a Behrendorff delivery to deep square leg and had reached only 42 when Aaron Finch pulled a wide Ash Agar delivery on his stumps at the start of the seventh over.

Earlier, bowling and fielding errors cost the Renegades plenty as they again struggled to take wickets.

After taking just two scalps in their eight-wicket loss to the Sydney Sixers in round 1, they managed to dismiss only three Perth batsmen on Friday.

Momentum was against them early in the innings when Scorchers opener Andrew Fekete missed a pretty simple caught and bowled chance to dismiss Perth opener Marcus Harris in the second over when he was on just 10.

The Scorchers then raced to 55 from their first six-over Power Play and were 84m without loss of a wicket at the half-way mark of their innings.

Harris went on to score 53 runs from 39 balls and shared in a 103-run opening partnership with Klinger.

Klinger was 44 when that Harris wicket fell and he took the initiative after that dismissal.

The 19th over when he hit 20 from Dwayne Bravo to go from 77 run to 97 was the highlight.

His second 50 came from just 22 balls after he'd taken 38 balls to bring up his first half-century.
