Sydneysiders trying to escape the city for their Christmas holidays faced a frustrating day on the state's roads on Boxing Day, with the M1 and the Princes Highway proving the greatest headache.

Traffic was backed up 10 kilometres on the M1 Pacific Motorway after a crash between a fuel tanker and five cars closed two northbound lanes about 12.20pm.
The lanes were closed near the Hawkesbury River Bridge for just under an hour, reopening about 1.10pm, causing significant delays.
Two drivers received minor injuries in the crash and were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Those heading south on the Princes Highway were delayed for up to 35 minutes at Berry at one point, with traffic backed up 7.5 kilometres.
In the state's north, traffic on the Pacific Highway near Macksville and Urunga, and at Ewingsdale, near Byron Bay, was heavy but eased in the afternoon.
By 5pm, the only road listed as experiencing delays was the M1.
