The Brumbies announced a $1.07 million loss this week. They are still searching for a major sponsor and a chief executive to take them into the future.

But Larkham has already started to "tidy up the edges" of the rugby program in an attempt to reduce costs, including changing the 2015 travel schedule and aiming to work more efficiently in Canberra.

New chairman Robert Kennedy has flagged plans to "live within our means" and says the high performance program will not be a sacred cow.

"We've known about the $1.07 million loss, so we have a budget. We're not compromising our program but we've looked at where we can save money, and we've certainly done that," Larkham said.

"Our priority here at the Brumbies is to run the best rugby program in Australia. It always has been and always will be.

"Sometimes we realise we've got to be innovative, but we feel like we're running a very good program and it's [cutting] just around the edges."

The Brumbies have been rebuilt on the field over the past three seasons, rising from the ashes of a disastrous 2011 campaign to make the grand final last year and the preliminary final this year.

Larkham is about to start his first year as a senior head coach after sharing the role with director of rugby Laurie Fisher last year.

The Brumbies have already revised their travel arrangements for next year.

SANZAR, Super Rugby's governing body, provides funding for travel interstate and internationally. But if clubs wish to spend more outside of the allocated amount, it comes out of the team's coffers.

Under World Cup-winning mentor Jake White's watch, the Brumbies started spending an extra night in Sydney before flying to New Zealand or South Africa.

But after a poor record on the road this year – they won just one of four matches abroad – Larkham has decided to scrap the extra night of expenses.

"Our travel record was terrible last year ... we don't need to stay the night before because it didn't work for us," Larkham said.

"The program is the one thing that will not be compromised. We'll be diligent with what we do but performance and creating the best environment for our players is still the No.1 priority."

The Brumbies board will meet on Friday to discuss potential major sponsors and move to finalise the search for a chief executive. It is understood the chief executive race is close to be finished after Doug Edwards resigned.

The Brumbies had a boardroom shake up this week, with Kennedy taking over from Sean Hammond, who had spent nine years as chairman and 11 years as a board member.

Kennedy is keen on developing local talent and feeding it into the Brumbies' system.

Larkham invited some of Canberra's club rugby best to join pre-season training for the past month and has recruited Canberra juniors Tom Staniforth, Les Makin and Rodney Iona to the full-time squad for next year.

In recent years all Brumbies contracted players have been aligned to Canberra premier division teams and playing in the first grade competition when not on Super Rugby duty.

"I agree we should be looking in the Canberra competition and that has been a mantra, developing and drawing from the local competition," Larkham said.

A new Brumbies chief executive could be appointed before Christmas if the board agrees they have the appropriate candidate to help the club move forward.

The club has also been meeting with up to four companies who are considering a naming-rights partnership.

Larkham has also started talks with several players whose contracts expire at the end of next year.
