7.30 Qld will be replaced by a national edition as part of sweeping changes to the ABC in the wake of a $254 million dollar federal funding cut.

QUT Professor of Media and Communications Terry Flew said on Monday the number of people involved in the coverage of state politics around Australia had fallen dramatically this century.

"As political news bureaus have emptied, they've emptied faster in the state offices than they have in Canberra," Professor Flew.

"As someone who teaches journalism graduates, I know how many of them now eye a state government job rather than a journalism job."

State Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk went further, slamming the end of 7.30 Qld as "disgusting".

"I think it is disgraceful that such a great show that brings into the living room around Queensland issues that are impacting upon Queenslanders right across the state - whether it is in Longreach, the Torres Strait, Cairns, Townsville - [is axed]," she said.

"I am really disturbed by those fundamental cuts to the ABC. It is going to have a huge impact on what the viewers get to see at home."

Rumours about the end of state-based editions of 7.30 began swirling two months ago when it became clear Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull would insist on the ABC and SBS joining other departments in achieving efficiency dividends.

Program host Matt Wordsworth is currently on leave, but after the November 7 show tweeted "That may've been my last 730 Qld due to G20/holidays/mooted ABC cuts. If so, thanks for your support and a shout out to our hardworking team".

The program's Friday night slot meant it was never a great ratings winner, but many have expressed their sadness over the news.

General manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Nick Behrens wrote on Twitter that the show was "an invaluable current affairs medium on Qld issues".

Queensland Tourism Industry Council Daniel Gschwind replied "Agreed".

Other changes to affect Queensland include the sale of the ABC's Gladstone studio, and the axing of two radio jobs in Rockhampton. The central Queensland city will now take its afternoons program from Brisbane.

Host Rebecca McLaren tweeted "Today I mourn the loss of the best fun you can have and call it work. Seven more shows for regional Qld arvos, may we make them great".

Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters said Tony Abbott had lied when he said before the 2013 election there would be no cuts to the ABC, and now the Capricornia region was bearing the brunt.

"Local coverage is essential in allowing detailed, informed debate of issues that matter in the region and in acting as a platform for the rest of the world to hear about these stories.

"Gladstone ABC provided detailed, timely coverage of the Gladstone Harbour environmental disaster, which was an international story."

But Liberal senator for Queensland Ian Macdonald said the axe should have fallen in the broadcaster's Sydney headquarters.

"ABC Ultimo is a bloated bastion of broadcasting bureaucrats who have had their snouts in the public trough for far too long. It's time they took their cuts, rather than shifting the pain onto others," he said.

"The location and nature of the cuts is entirely the decision of the ABC management, not the Government," he said.

ABC Brisbane, meanwhile, is set to lose music legend Bill Riner, known as the Molly Meldrum of radio.

Riner has programmed music for all local radio stations for the past two decades, giving many local bands and artists a chance to feature on the national playlist.

Song selection will now be carried out by Double J in Sydney.
