However, not everyone can afford to have a dedicated person to regularly clean and maintain their pool, says Bunnings national leisure buyer, Ben Shanley. To help keep costs down, here are Ben's DIY tips for keeping your pool looking fresh throughout the year.

1. Find the balance: Keep chemical levels balanced to ensure pool water is safe for swimming. Strip kits that measure the chemical balance and pH levels should be used to maintain optimum levels – most back yard pools should be kept between 7.2 to 7.8 pH.

2. Test the water: Some stores, such as Bunnings, offer free in-store pool and spa water testing service that measures the levels of chlorine, pH balance, total alkalinity and cyanuric acid, a chemical that stops chlorine from being destroyed by the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

3. Top it up: Loss of water will occur naturally because of evaporation and swimming displacement caused by diving and entering and exiting the pool. Pool pumps can be damaged if water levels are too low, so try to maintain a consistent level by using tank water to regularly top up your pool or spa.

4. Keep it covered: Always cover the pool when it is not in use to prevent debris from clogging the filter system and causing damage. A cover or pool blanket also reduces evaporation which will save water and minimise the need to top up.

5. Keep it clean: Use a hand-skimmer to remove leaves, bugs and other debris from the pool and clean filters every few months, especially after heavy storms or windy days. This will ensure the pump doesn’t become blocked and keep the pool’s circulation system efficient, as well as lowering the amount of chlorine needed.

6. Seal the cracks: If cracks start appearing between the tiles or bricks surrounding the pool, use a caulk gun to seal them and prevent water escaping through the tiny space and increasing the damage.

7. Safe storage: Safety is a priority so make sure you store chemicals in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and animals.
