DESIGN extraordinaire Tara Dennis will share her best home decorating tips and tricks at Googong this Sunday, October 19.

Tara, best known for her appearances on Better Homes and Gardens, said the key is to create 'storyboards' and she will be showing the public how to create their own.

She uses them every day in her design studio as well as during the creative process for her home wares range.

"Storyboards are a simple exercise but can be really reassuring, especially to see everything laid out," she said.

"It's particularly important for those big ticket rooms like the kitchen and bathroom to see if things like the tiles and bench tops will work together."

Tara's styling session will begin from 11.30am and there'll be helpful hints for new homeowners through to renovators.

She will be joined by a panel of six experts in interior design and architecture on the day.

Ikea, ahead of their new store opening in Canberra next year, will also be involved with prizes and goodie bags.

"It will be an informal session so I want people to come and ask questions and learn as much as they can," she sad.

"It's for those working from scratch or those renovators who are working with they already have."

Tara has just returned from a whirlwind trip to Paris and London. She was visiting tradeshows for inspiration and searching for the next wave of trends.

Materials including copper, brass, timber, resin, marble and concrete are the next big thing.

"People should be open minded when it comes to these materials, we have new methods and technology to manipulate them into all sorts of vessels, tables, bowls and lights," she said.

"In terms of fabrics, yellow and in particular mustard is really popular and you have the charcoal and slate grey to counterbalance it."

However, Tara suggests creating a good base and saving trends for smaller items.

"I always say 'buy once, buy well' so you want good basics. Things like the lounge and kitchen fit out should be quite neutral and timeless," she said.

"Create that base framework and then you can incorporate trends through the colours and accents because they will come and go."

Tara, an expat of Canberra, said she's looking forward to visiting the area and in particular seeing how Googong is shaping up.

"I remember going to Googong Dam as a kid and thinking it was miles away and Tuggeranong was practically near the snow," she said with a laugh.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing Googong and how it's changed."

The 'style tips and trick' event will run this Sunday, October 19 at Beltana Park, Googong from 11am to 2pm. Tara Dennis's styling workshop will begin from 11.30am.
