It was a great result for the club in just their second season of playing in the state league, and also came after they merged with the former Queanbeyan Hockey Club to strengthen their playing stocks this year.

The clubs Friday mid-week competition side also made the preliminary finals this season, while their under 18s girls team made it to the semi-finals.

Queanbeyan United president Bob Parkes said he was looking forward to moving up divisions for the first time.

"We'll be playing in division two and three next year. Each team will be basically moving up a grade," Parkes said.

The men's division four side won one of the most intense grand finals seen across Hockey ACT's grand final weekend, eventually winning 2-1 on a penalty shoot-out after the scores were locked at full time.

They had plenty of chances to win the game in normal time, and despite dominating the early stages of the match they struggled to find the target in attack.

Josh Campbell, Lewis Norden, and Will Unwin all had opportunities in attack and caused problems as they scampered behind the ANU defence, but could not find the killer touch in the circle.

But inner player Trevor Ovington made no mistake with his winning penalty, as he sent the keeper flying in the wrong direction with his low, powerful push.

The third division team put on a gallant display in their grand final against a ruthless Daramalan last weekend, and pushed the minor premiers for the full 70 minutes before going down 4-3.

The clock ran down for Queanbeyan before they could find an equaliser, being denied the premiership despite spirited two-goal comeback in the middle of the match.
