It was 2007 and the country music lover's heart was torn apart by how an innocent little girl could be affected by such hardship.
She immediately decided to do what she could to help raise money for the on-going medical costs the family would endure.
She hit the phones, and in no time at all, had three bands and 36 country singers for a country music charity concert.
It raised $23,000 for the little girl's family, who received her life saving transplant, and is today happy and healthy.
That one act of kindness ignited a desire in Masters to help the unfortunate.
She has since held benefit concerts annually, with all profits raised going to charities in the Queanbeyan community.
This Sunday, her compassion continues when a slew of Australian country music stars gather at the Queanbeyan Lions Club. All profits raised will go to the Children with Special Needs charity in Queanbeyan.
"I do it because I love kids and they're the next generation coming up," Masters tells the Age.
"There's nothing worse than seeing a little child not coping and sick."
She humbly tells the Age that even before her first benefit concert seven years ago, whenever she would play gig with her girlfriends as a young lady they would donate their taking to the Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group.
But Masters insists she's not the only one doing what they can for the less fortunate.
She says not once has she had to organise a raffle basket at a concert. Each time the contents have been donated from the community.
Her audience members too, often the elderly, also handknit a range of clothing for the children.
"The community gives all the time," she says.
This Sunday's concert will see a range of highly decorated musicians take to the stage including Lindsay Butler, a multiple country golden guitar winning musician.
Other musicians include Shaza Leigh, Greg Bain and country music pianist Peggy Gilchrist.
Doors open at the Queanbeyan Lions Club between 2-5pm this Sunday. Tickets at the door.
