Monaro Panthers close out campaign

Monaro Panthers close out campaign

THE Monaro Panthers will wrap up their disappointing 2011 ACT Premier League campaign on Saturday against Woden Valley at Woden Park Enclosed Oval.

Fielding a young and largely inexperienced squad, the Panthers have won just one game this season. Last weekend saw the club fall 3-0 to Canberra City at Hawker Football Centre.

Monaro was always in trouble after Canberra’s Pat Ross-Magee netted inside the first 10 minutes before City doubled its advantage less than five minutes later through Canberra Rockets representative Sam McDonald.

Bungendore Tigers face Hawks

THE Bungendore Tigers’ season will be on the line this Saturday when the reigning George Tooke Shield premiers take on the Harden Hawks in an elimination semi-final at Boorowa.

In an inauspicious lead-in to the contest, the Tigers went down 18-14 to Harden last weekend in the final round of regular season competition.

Both side’s scored three tries apiece in the contest but goal kicking ultimately proved the difference as Bungendore captain/coach Steven Death landed just one of his three shots at goal.

LOCAL schools, sports clubs and sporting organisations still have time to submit a nomination in the 15th annual NSW Sports Safety Awards.

More than $20,000 in sports equipment vouchers will be up for grabs as part of the awards which recognise outstanding achievement in the prevention of sports related injuries and the education and adoption of safe sport practices.

Awards will be offered across three categories: education and promotion of safe sport practices, implementation and adoption of safe sport practices and applied sports medicine research.

“Entries can be as varied from a safe sports policy or practice to the development of guidance material or an awareness campaign,” general manager of Workcover’s Workers Compensation Division Geniere  Aplin said.

Tigerettes bring campaign to a close

Tigerettes bring campaign to a close

THE Queanbeyan Tigerettes rounded out their AFL Canberra Women’s Premiership campaign last weekend, going down 10.9 (69) to 1.0 (6) to Ainslie at Town Park.

The loss was Queanbeyan’s 12th from 16 games this season with the club unable to improve on last year’s seventh-place finish.

While an upset victory against a highly fancied Ainslie outfit was never on the cards, the Tigerettes were well in the game early. The underdogs trailed by just 14 points at half-time before Ainslie kicked away with a five-goal third term to put the result beyond doubt.

Mudchooks bite the dust

Mudchooks bite the dust

DEFENDING ACT Rugby Monaro Second Division premiers the Bungendore Mudchooks have bowed out of this year’s title race after going down 15-11 to Crookwell in last weekend’s minor semi-final.

After claiming back-to-back premierships in 2010/11, the Mudchooks struggled to recapture their championship winning form this season.

Bungendore went into last weekend’s contest on the back of a comprehensive 60-15 win over Boorowa in the final round but was unable to repeat the dose against Crookwell.

A host of off-season departures saw Bungendore field a largely new-look line-up this season and the club could manage only six wins in its 16 games.

Panthers prepare to pounce

Panthers prepare to pounce

THE Monaro Panthers remain an outside chance of securing the ACT Women’s State League 1 minor premiership this season heading into the competition’s final round.

The Panthers will take on competition frontrunners ANU at Waramanga on Sunday and a win could see Monaro supplant the students on top of the log.

The Panthers enter the final round as one of four teams separated by just two points at the top of the standings.

Regardless of the result in Sunday’ contest, Monaro is already assured of a finals spot having dropped just three games all season.
