In a week when the nation has mourned the tragic events of Boree Creek, the flash mob boogied down to the catchy tune Happy to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention as part of RUOK Day (video below.. apologies for poor sound quality)..
The health workers joined with professional dancers and Tamworth headspace in shedding their jackets to reveal bright yellow T-shirts for the cause, Tamworth City Dance Academy principal Kellie Singh said.
She said locals were enthralled by the spontaneous musical interlude during their lunch break or grocery shopping.
“Everyone stopped to watch and gave a really big cheer.”
She said the concept of checking in with a friend to make sure they are coping hit home for her dance troupe.
“We mainly teach teenagers and they’re one of the largest groups that struggles with mental health, self harm and eating disorders.”
Dancing could be effective for people struggling with mental health, as it provided a sense of community, Mrs Singh said.
“It’s a physical outlet, a form of expression where you can physically move and feel in the right headspace.”
