That's how Ron Coffey opened his short acceptance speech on Tuesday morning after winning a NSW 2014 Premier's Award for "excellence in community broadcasting and tireless advocacy for the Queanbeyan community."
The QBN-FM announcer has lived and breathed Queanbeyan over seven decades in the region. He's been a shearer, truck driver, caravan salesman, father, grandfather, landscape painter, musician, Queanbeyan Whites' footballer, and since the early 2000s, the smooth-talking breakfast announcer on community station QBN-FM.
"This is like getting 'Man of the Match' in a football game," Mr Coffey said. "There's a lot of people who help you get it."
As for where he gets his enthusiasm for broadcasting and the Queanbeyan community, Mr Coffey said it mostly boiled down to stubbornness.
"I've got a campaign on at the moment against head-high tackles, shoulder charges and spear tackles in junior rugby league. When I think that something is so wrong that it needs fixing, I don't let up. I don't give in until it's fixed."
- QBN-FM has been on the air waves since April 7, 2000. Tune in on 96.7 FM. Ron Coffey does the breakfast program Wednesday/Thursdays 6am-9am.
