A depleted Aussie Hotel Yass Roos faced Molonglo last Sunday and after an intense, bruising struggle they came away with victory. The final score was Yass 11-14-80 to Molonglo 9-7-61 but the win was only secured in the last quarter when Yass dug deep and kicked five goals.

A change of start times and then a late notice return to the original starting time had the Roos with only 18 players available at the first bounce so the game was reduced to a 16-a-side game. This gave Molonglo the advantage of six fresh players from the bench which they put to good effect throughout the game.
The Yass supporters were a little quiet early as Molonglo jumped to an early lead. The wind was gusty and playing havoc with judging the flight of the ball. Yass rallied a little at the end of the first quarter and the low scoring meant they were not too far off the pace at 1-2-8 to 2-4-16 for the first quarter.
At halftime Yass had their noses in front (4-7-31 to 4-5-29) and everyone knew this was going to be a nail-biter. Molonglo had their sights set on an upset.
The third quarter saw both teams work it up and down the field in an even contest. Molonglo scored more goals to go into the last quarter with another small lead 8-6-54 to 6-10-46.
Yass saved their best for last and they needed it. The Yass supporters were very vocal in their efforts to lift the team and celebrated every goal while on the edge of their seat. The first goal went to Molonglo but it turned out to be their last as well. Great defence by the Roos saw the ball delivered strongly to the forwards and they made the most of it to open a gap that could not be closed as time ran out for Molonglo.
Best players were Ben Serafin, Aaron Wilson, Simon Goyne, Jarrad Forlonge, Tom Hanson, Darren Pfeiffer, Daniel Smith, Jake Forth and Jak Willcox. Goal scorers were Jak Willcox, Doug Watchorn and Jarrad Forlonge with three goals each while Ben Serafin and Aaron Wilson got singles.
This win sets up an exciting showdown with Cootamundra at Joe O'Connor Park next Saturday. The result will determine the top of the ladder for the finals. Both teams have only lost one match this season and this is the last home and away match. If you have not seen the Roos this season then I highly recommend you get yourself to this match as it should be a cracker.
There is plenty of rivalry between these two sides and a lot riding on the outcome. Top spot means a week off and the chance to get to the grand final with just one win in the top five finals arrangement.
I'll be there and I hope to see you at the footy. Go the Roos!
