They proved to be the queens of Queanbeyan soccer last week in taking the city's only Kanga Cup title out of eight teams that took to the field.

Monaro fielded male teams in the under  10s, 11s, 12s, 14s and 16s groups and female teams in the under 14s and 16s/17s, while the Queanbeyan City Football Club had one side in the male under 13s division.

Under 16s/17s championship player Sophie Bui was one of the best on ground according to coach Tilly Carbone.

Playing striker, she bagged two goals in the grand final to lead her side to a comfortable 3-1 win over Central Coast side the Gwandalan Cobras.

She also kicked five goals in six games over five days of play.

"She scored those two goals in the grand final and had a very good tournament," said Carbone.

Carbone likened Bui, who plays for Monaro in the under 16s girls premier league, to develop into a first grade player in the years to come.

Brielle Jancevski, Annaliza Nardi, Emily Trinik, Caitlin Trinik, Sophie Rolfe and Georgia Rood also played crucial roles and did their future aspirations no harm according to Carbone.

He said they were inspirational in overcoming a two goal deficit in the semi-final to score three goals in 15 minutes.

"It's very hard to win a Kanga Cup- I've managed to coach in six finals and this is the first win I've had- so it was a great achievement for the girls to be able to come through and win," he said.

The team was made up of eight players from each of Monaro's under 16s and 19s premier league teams, with the oldest players being 17 years old.

Helping coach the side was under 19s coach Darren Lynch.

Carbone said the win proved the club was doing a lot for grass roots women's sport.

"I think we have an advantage over the teams that haven't played in the Kanga Cup female divisions," he said.

"The intensity of the week should really improve our girls' fitness and should see them through the rest of the season."
