The first armed robbery occurred at Queanbeyan West Veterinary Hospital, Uriarra Road at about 2.55pm. The man threatened staff before leaving with a sum of cash.
Staff members described the assailant as being 185cm tall, of solid build and of Pacific Islander appearance.
Later that evening at 6.35pm, a male of similar appearance and also in possession of a machete held up New Planet Supermarket in Gilmore Place.
He took a sum of money before running off towards the direction of Tharwa Road.
Queanbeyan Police acting inspector Graeme Bailey said there were strong links between the two incidents. He confirmed officers had interviewed one male in relation to the hold-ups.
Business owners from both of the companies involved declined to comment. They said no one was harmed during the robberies.
