QUEANBEYAN’S local council regularly finds and collects animals that have been found wandering in their streets, but it is not every day that the animal is a goat.

A white billy goat nicknamed ‘Billy’ was found by the rangers on May 8 where it was seen eating and wandering around the vegie patch at Jerrabomberra Primary School.

How he got there was also a bizarre scenario as the goat followed a year 6 student and his brother to the school.

Principal of the school Chris Hunter found the appearance quite humorous and had to explain to the boy that he was not in a children’s story.

“It was actually quite funny,” Hunter said.

“I had to remind the boy that his name was not Mary and this was not a little lamb.”

While wandering around the vegetable patch at the school, the goat had decided to move to another location for food.

The location he found was the school’s chook pen where the goat eventually got stuck and had to be rescued by the rangers.

“He ate the vegies and unfortunately got locked in the chook pen by the cleaner,” Hunter said.

“We had to get him out of there because he was eating all the vines and things.”

The goat is currently in the stockyards where he stays with his new friend, a sheep while trying to find as much food as he can.

Ranger Sheree Curwen described the goat has having domestic qualities and was definitely used as a suburban pet.

“He’s very handable and domesticated as far as a billy goat goes,” Curwen said.

“He’s like a dog really and probably has got better manners than most dogs.

‘Billy’ the white goat has been described by the rangers as an animal which craves the attention of humans and is quite big in size for a normal goat.

The Council is unsure on where the goat came from however is currently searching for a good and safe home for him.
