THEY may have been up against one current and one former Australian mens bowler, but the Queanbeyan Bowling Club took out the Pennant number one series lawn bowls competition on May 4 at the Canberra Bowling Club.

It proved to be a grand effort from the 12 local men, split into three teams, who were the clear underdogs in the grand final against Weston Creek, who are reputable heavyweights in the 10 week Pennant boasting national player Andrew Howie and retired legend Adam Jeffrey.

Of the eight games the men played they won six, finishing fourth overall.

The three teams each played one match against their Weston counterparts, with Queanbeyan taking two of the three for an overall 63-56 win to be crowned 2014 champions.

Queanbeyan skipper Scott Dagwell said Weston were the better team throughout the competition, but his men bowled extremely well and hit their peak form when it mattered.

"Not many people gave us a chance against Weston Creek's experience," said Dagwell.

"We had a pretty good year with Weston as the favourites throughout with lots of ACT players, Howie and Jeffrey."

They took out third place finishers Canberra City in the minor sem-final before dispatching Yass in the major to reach their encounter with Weston.

In the grand final Dagwell's four men found themselves facing Howie's, but came out suprise 26-17 winners.

The other two Queanbeyan teams of four were lead by former Kiwi representative Sean Roberston and Peter Daly; Roberston's men taking out Jeffrey's while Daly's went down by 11.

"We are good enough to win. We just got belief in ourselves and confidence after winning two semi's on the Saturday before the grand final," said Dagwell.

They flogged Canberra City 68-45 before dispatching Yass 57-48.
