The Queanbeyan Blues faced a tough road trip to Goulburn where they muscled an inspired comeback over the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 26-22 after trailing 18-0, while the Queanbeyan Kangaroos kicked a late field goal to assure them a 27-20 win over the Woden Rams at Freebody Oval.
Blues coach Simon Woolford admitted his men were scrappy at times at Goulburn Workers Arena but was happy they were able to re-group and turn the game around so early in the season.
"We could have dropped our bundle but we re-grouped at half time and the boys pegged them slowly and gradually in the second half which was very pleasing," he said.
Woolford has eight new players in his squad this season and he said it was good to see younger players stepping up during their come-back win.
"We missed one of our trials due to the weather which didn't help, but I thought all the new guys really stood up and they showed plenty so we'll just get better and better hopefully," he said.
Goulburn signed Raiders fringe half Mick Picker and former Manly winger Michael Barni this season, and they were able to put the Blues under the pump with their kicking game.
But Woolford said his men were prepared for it and this was reflected in their comeback effort.
For the Kangaroos Tuggeranong import Josh Mitchell proved why he is one of the best playmakers in the competition, booting three goals and a field goal in an outstanding first outing.
Half Jordan Macey was also on fire, crossing the goal line twice while combining well with fullback Ratu Tagive.
