The AFL acted on Monday to address renewed criticism of its score review system after an embarrassing blunder during Sunday's Melbourne-Gold Coast game, and suggestions that over-use during the Geelong-Hawthorn blockbuster stopped play unnecessarily.

Football operations manager Mark Evans revealed on Monday that the league would trial cameras in goalposts at the MCG and Etihad Stadium to see if goal-line vision assists officials with reviews where the current technology was not sufficient.

The plan is to trial the new cameras at the two Melbourne venues to assess the cost and best method for permanent installation for the rest of the league's grounds next year and beyond.

"We want to see if we can find a permanent solution for each of the venues, and that's what we hope to do with the MCG and Etihad in the second half of this year," Evans said.

"It won't be 100 per cent foolproof, but I think we can make it a little bit better," he said.

"We've had 17 reviews for the season so far, so we've got three to four reviews per round, and the technology that we are using with the synchronised vision gives us a pretty good look at more than two-thirds of those.

"For the ones it doesn't give us a good look at, we think goalpost cameras will clean up a lot of that for us."

The AFL have so far refrained from installing the goal-line cameras due to concerns over the high costs.

Evans said there would be "enormous challenges" in laying the cable to set up goalpost cameras at Etihad.

It's understood installing the cameras in all AFL venues would cost about $500,000.

Evans admitted the score review in the Demons-Suns game at the MCG, where James Frawley was awarded a goal despite the vision showing the ball had been touched before the goal line, had been a "human error" by the official reviewer.

He said there had been sufficient vision with the current technology for the correct call to have been made.

On a weekend when the AFL was put under the microscope by supporters, coaches and players for issues such as ticket prices, a shift in umpiring interpretations and the score review system, Evans also addressed another key concern on the minds of everyone in the industry: the aesthetics of the game.

Following another ugly contest between Melbourne and Gold Coast, respected commentator Dermott Brereton said on Monday he loved watching the game as much as anyone but acknowledged even he thought football had reached its lowest point as a spectacle.

Evans said the AFL was aware that the number of players directly around the ball, the so called "rolling maul", had gone to another level again this season, and admitted the league did not know what specific tactic had caused that.

He even suggested that theories proposed by famed player and coach Leigh Matthews and others to clean up congestion - where certain players would be restricted to certain areas of the field - could be discussed with clubs.

"It has been thrown up that, do you have some restrictions to where players are on the ground?" Evans said.

"It's still a matter of, if we were to bring in some restrictions ... how you would umpire that.

"And it is what we'll take to clubs through our consultation process this year and discuss."

On a more positive note for the league, Evans said feedback on the introduction of players' names on the back of jumpers had been largely positive, although the size of the names could be enhanced in the future.
