This was a question being pondered by Melbourne women Sarah Alekna and Peta Dermatis who, as casting directors, have seen hundreds of CVs presented in hard copy by enthusiastic young actors.

“We found it quite a contrast to have these young, tech-savvy actors present their hard-copy CV in the digital age. It got us wondering why there wasn't an option to create a digital CV, which gave us the idea for the business.”

The pair recently launched twobeesdigital.com.au, which creates a digital CV for anyone, in any industry.

Content is limited only by your imagination and, perhaps, budget. While the basic package costs $375 including website hosting and a free 30 minute consultation, the pair will give you as many bells and whistles as you like, including a video chat to camera on the site for prospective employees to watch, some samples of your work and relevant links. There's also an option to print a hard copy of your CV for those that wish, and you get to choose your own URL. The CV can be password protected.

“It doesn't matter how old you are or what work you do, a digital and interactive CV that you can add content to is a far better option for anyone either job hunting, or for those just keeping their eye out for a new opportunity,” Alekna says.

“People trying to decide whether to hire you are usually navigating their way through information about you online anyway. And attention spans are short.”

Alekna says recruiters have been optimistic about the offering as a whole.

“A lot of recruiting firms offer workshops on how to create hard-copy CVs, so it's going to take them a while to get their head around the idea of digital CVs.”

You can, of course, create a digital CV on your own, with the help of a free platform like WordPress or Wix.

LinkedIn is also another form of online CV, available for the world to see for free.

Whatever you choose, remember that a cutting-edge CV is about much more than design elements, according to professional career coach Fiona Craig.

“Sure, in some industries such as the creative space, the design of the CV is an opportunity to showcase your own creative talents. However, in many more traditional corporate industries such as finance, law, accounting, etc, a more traditional approach to design is better,” she says.

The first page of your CV should provide a compelling and accurate snapshot of your strengths and achievements, and explain the value you will bring to a prospective employer, she says.

“Every so often, I still get nine page CVs, where I have to wade through the information to even find out what the person does. As a former recruiter, I know that these CVs will go to the bottom of the pile.”

A cutting-edge CV has clean design, is short, and purposeful, she says.

“What I mean by that is that it's targeted and tailored towards the precise role you're applying for.”

Craig also suggests a one-page bio as a useful tool in certain circumstances where a CV might be overkill, such as initial conversations with a firm hiring for a role you're interested in.

Group director of recruitment firm Randstad, Steve Shepherd, says he understands the appeal of making a CV stand out from the crowd, but the key is making sure it's easy to access quickly.

He's noticed a growing number of job seekers develop fuller profiles on LinkedIn and also Google+ and Facebook.

“Here you're able to build your profile in what is effectively an online resume format, post examples of work, videos of yourself, blog on industry issues, include references from customers, colleagues and old employers while also building networks and passive relationships with potential future employers,” Shepherd says.

“Hiring managers look at resumes and want to see you match their hiring criteria in the first page, not buried somewhere on a fancy online site.

“Also, make sure you adapt your resume to each job so they can see how you compare very quickly,” he says.
