Queanbeyan's upcoming athletics champions rise to Melbourne Nationals

QUEANBEYAN will send the most little athletics competitors to a national championships since 2011 with five athletes making the cut at the ACT state championships on March 23.

Under 13's athletes Zane Bijorac, Caitlin Hannah and Hannah McPherson will make the trip to Melbourne for the nationals in May with under 15's athletes Ben Cassie and Courtney Hopkins.for High Jump and Long Jump.

Bijorac will aim to become the best in Australia in high jump, hurdles and long jump, while Hannah will add hurdles for herself and McPherson will go for gold in discus, javelin and shot put.

Cassie and Hopkins will try their luck in the set events of 100m, 800m, hurdles, discus and long jump.

The five prodigies came from a 21-athlete Queanbeyan Little Athletics Centre team that finished the event seventh from 16 centres from the ACT region.

Age divisions ranged from under nine's to under 17's.

Queanbeyan's top five will travel to Melbourne as part of a 22-athelete ACT representative squad.

Queanbeyan Little Athletics Centre throws coach and under 13's and 14's girls manager Marnie Gigliotti said that for a small number of Queanbeyan athletes competing at the ACT state championships they did very well.

"The amount of personal bests that the kids achieved was fantastic," she said.
