"This announcement signals the commencement of construction that means digging pits, putting in the cables which should take an average of 12 months," general manager of external affairs Trent Williams said.
"Once that's finished residents will be able to order services with the available providers."
The 2800 homes and businesses affected are primarily located in central Queanbeyan and further out towards Oaks Estate, according to the roll-out map provided on the NBN Co. website. They will become part of the fibre-to-the-premises network.
The NBN is also taking shape in Googong alongside the suburb's development.
Member for Monaro Peter Hendy welcomed the announcement. He said a general review of the NBN roll-out was due mid-year. This review would make clear which areas will be the next to receive the rollout and will be announced by the end of the year.
There has been some confusion over which areas of Queanbeyan will receive NBN with areas including Karabar, Letchworth and Jerrabomberra under question.
However, Mr Hendy expects all parts of Queanbeyan will be connected to the service.
"My understanding is the whole of Queanbeyan will receive the NBN because it is a major town that is unless there are technical difficulties. That is something for the NBN Co to determine, I'm not a technical expert and I don't pretend be," Mr Hendy said.
"Our view is that the NBN is critical infrastructure and it's important to deliver it in an efficient and affordable way."
